Ph.D Neuroscience, University of Alabama at Birmingham
BS Biology, Southeastern University
Dr. Aimee Franklin received her B.S in Biology from Southeastern University in 2007. She then received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she investigated pathological synaptic mechanisms underlying learning and memory deficits in Fragile X syndrome, the most commonly inherited form of mental retardation and leading known genetic cause for autism.
Dr. Franklin received numerous institutional awards and funding as well as grants from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke (NINDS). Dr. Franklin’s work has been published in her field’s top journals including the Journal of Biological Psychiatry where her publication was a finalist for the Aizkind-Somerfeld Research Award.
Dr. Franklin returned to Southeastern in 2014 with the desire to start an undergraduate neuroscience research laboratory. Her laboratory opened in 2016 and allows undergraduate students to gain valuable experience in study design, research techniques and data analysis in the field of neuroscience while on their journey towards graduate programs.
In addition to research, she teaches courses in Anatomy and Physiology, Neuroscience and Senior Capstone. Her passion for research and teaching is equally matched by her passion for mentoring and advising students which she calls the most rewarding and fulfilling aspects of working at Southeastern. For her teaching, research and advising while at Southeastern, she has received the Outstanding Faculty in Scholarship, One Big Night Faculty of the Year and Most Outstanding Faculty of the Year awards.
In 2021 she became the Dean of the College of Natural and Health Sciences where she oversees the Kinesiology, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Nursing Departments.
