Ph.D. in General Psychology: Cognition & Instruction, Grand Canyon University
M.A. in Professional Counseling, Liberty University
B.S. in Psychology, Southeastern University
Dr. Bethany C. Torres O’Brien comes to Southeastern University as an assistant professor of psychology 10 years after finishing her bachelor’s degree from her alma mater. She has counseled children in school-based therapy for over 6 years in the state of Pennsylvania while completing her doctoral degree. She has also worked in the educational system for 4 years as a tutor, program assistant, and computer and reading teacher in the state of Florida. Additionally, she has served her local church in children and youth ministries. She has worked in higher education for over 5 years.
The testimony of her birth led Dr. Torres O’Brien to come to her faith at an early age. Her parents, themselves educators, and ministers endured an arduous wait of ten long years. Then her miracle birth was met with a possible defect on her skull. Through prayer and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, her Father was given the verse Jeremiah 29:11. Her passion for Christ and psychology arrived while growing up in Pennsylvania, where she was bullied and belittled by students and teachers. She knew she wanted to help children and become an advocate for others.
While obtaining her Ph.D., her dissertation was inspired by the rapport between SEU faculty. She stays relevant in the field of general, social, and cognitive psychology by reading literature and participating in weekly research group meetings.
She relishes her time with her husband of 2 years, being surrounded by her family and friends, reading, and going to amusement parks! One thing she holds onto is that God truly has a purpose and deep love for us; she is a true testament to His unfailing love. Although the future may be uncertain, we can all take courage from the one who holds the future!
