Janet L. Deck

Bio

In 2008, Dr. Janet Deck joined the faculty at Southeastern, her alma mater, to share her expertise and 25 years of experience in education, including stints in public, private, and homeschool. Most of her K-12 teaching years were spent working with fifth-grade students, teaching at both Campbell Park Elementary School in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Faith Christian Academy in Orlando. She has also taught Latin in middle and high school and has taught English at the South African School of Theology.

In addition to working in schools, churches, and missions (Johannesburg) for 30+ years, Dr. Deck also homeschooled her four children. Seeing the disparity in literacy proficiency the Afrikaans schools, the township schools in South Africa, Title I schools in America, and private schools in America has only fueled Dr. Deck's passion for reading education, both here and abroad.

Knowing that if students do not learn to read, their academic demise is inevitable, Dr. Deck strives to instill an infectious passion for reading in her university students, who will then pass that passion on to their students. Dr. Deck says that the opportunity to teach Southeastern education majors how to be passionate about reading excites her.
She also teaches her students to engage budding readers with hands-on, interactive reading strategies. Dr. Deck further believes that, besides students' academic needs for solid reading instruction, those who cannot read God's Word miss out on this important form of communication from God.

Dr. Deck teaches the following classes: Research-based Practices in Literacy Instruction, Advanced Foundations in Literacy Education, Qualitative Research Methods; and Educational Research. Her research interests are the science of reading and summer reading loss.
