Bio

Dr. Tyson Voigt is a versatile percussionist with a performing career ranging from classical to commercial music, avant-garde to early music classics. He currently serves as Dean and Director of Percussion Studies in the School of Music at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida, and as a section percussionist with the Lakeland Symphony Orchestra.

Tyson has performed with numerous orchestras, chamber groups, commercial bands, jazz groups, musical theaters, and as a soloist across the country and in Europe. These engagements have taken him to Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and many other wonderful venues. These engagements included work with several of music’s superstars, such as Pulitzer Prize-winning composers David Lang and Steve Reich, as well as renowned composers Ben Johansen, Alejandro Viñao, Scott McAllister, Paul Dooley, and Charles Mason. He has also performed and studied with many of today’s top percussionists including Steven Schick, Meehan/Perkins Duo, Svet Stoyanov, So Percussion (quartet), Michael Burritt, Matthew Strauss, Tom Freer, and many others.

Tyson has commissioned and premiered over 20 musical works thus far, fueled by his ardor for contemporary music. For example, the soprano/percussion Resound Duo with Dr. Jennifer Voigt, soprano (Modern Worship Arts Director at First Presbyterian Church in Lakeland and Adjunct Professor of Voice at Southeastern University), addresses social and spiritual topics through dramatic performance, and has commissioned 13 commissions works together.

Additionally, as a passionate educator, Tyson has teamed up with percussionist Matthew Nichols as the duo Two of a Kind. They are dedicated to recording previously under-celebrated percussion music, especially that found on high school contest lists around the country. Their first volume of works, titled Just Two, will be released through the Hoot/Wisdom Recordings label in 2022.

Tyson endorses Remo products and resides with his family in Lakeland, Florida.
